CFE’s 2025 Tax Symposium: “Taxation in Transition: Compliance, Rights & Innovation in a High-Data World”

On 18 September 2025, the historic venue Oude Vismijn in Ghent, Belgium, will host one of the most important international tax events of the year: the CFE Tax Symposium 2025, titled “Taxation in Transition: Compliance, Rights & Innovation in a High-Data World.

Organised by CFE Tax Advisers Europe, this annual Symposium has established itself as a unique platform for dialogue between policy makers, EU institutions, academics, and tax professionals. The 2025 edition comes at a decisive moment, as the international tax landscape undergoes unprecedented transformation driven by global reform, EU legislative initiatives, and rapid technological change.

The Symposium will be opened by Prof. Piergiorgio Valente, President of CFE Tax Advisers Europe and one of the most influential voices in international tax policy. His welcome address will set the tone for a day devoted to examining how tax systems can balance compliance, taxpayers’ rights, and innovation in an increasingly data-driven environment.

Programme highlights

The Symposium’s agenda will feature three main panels, each addressing a core challenge in today’s tax landscape:

  • EU & International Tax Policy Landscape
Discussion on the implementation of OECD Pillar Two, EU simplification efforts, and prospects for global coordination.
  • DAC and Taxpayers’ Rights
Focus on the recast of the EU DAC framework, proportionality of tax obligations, pre-populated tax returns, and the protection of taxpayers’ fundamental rights.
  • AI, Tax Technology & Indirect Tax
Exploration of the opportunities and risks linked to AI-enabled tools, real-time VAT reporting systems (MOSS, IOSS, VIDA), and the ethical use of taxpayer data.

Speakers will include leading experts from the OECD, the European Commission, national tax administrations, academia, and professional organisations, ensuring a comprehensive exchange of perspectives at the highest level.

A forward-looking dialogue

The 2025 Symposium will reaffirm the CFE’s mission to shape the future of taxation in an era defined by digitalisation, international cooperation, and evolving compliance challenges. It will also highlight how innovation must go hand in hand with the safeguarding of taxpayers’ rights and the development of robust, transparent, and efficient tax systems.
